CBN and Sleep
Insomnia, or “sleeplessness,” as it is defined scientifically, can be caused by so many factors. That is why forming a treatment plan can prove just as elusive. Sleepless nights can be caused by medical conditions and body chemistry, as well as psychiatric conditions and poor behaviors. That could even include substance abuse or sleep deprivation.
Many Things to Consider
Tackling either side of the spectrum is challenging when it comes to finding a sleep aid because it’s difficult to decipher the root of the problem. Insomnia is also a prolific side effect of many common medications, including anti-depressants (specifically selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors), decongestants, stimulants prescribed for ADD, and many more. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are strong medications that both came into popularity during the twentieth century and continue to be some of the most highly prescribed sleeping aids to date. These also come with their own list of side effects and dangerous addictive qualities.
Certainly in today’s day in age, however, there are many holistic alternatives and over the counter medications that are much safer for use. One therapy that continues to be investigated as a treatment for insomnia is cannabis. Scientists and cannabis geneticists are now focused on pulling the best and most appropriate cannabinoids out of the plant to do so.
The cannabis plant is composed of cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are related compounds that produce a variety of effects when consumed together. Cannabinoids interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system, providing relief as well as regeneration for many conditions. It is the different levels of these cannabinoids that are now being manipulated by sophisticated growers in order to provide the best yield for the plant’s intended medicinal purpose. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most well known cannabinoid due to its apparent psychoactive properties.
CBN, or cannabinol, is a much lesser known cannabinoid that historically hasn’t been as highly regarded or favored by geneticists. This is likely because high levels of CBN are typically found in older bud, but this is for scientific reason. CBN usually results as a degradation of THC, or rather, when THC oxidizes. Because CBN is nearly non-psychoactive, it is a cannabinoid that has been underrated until recent years and merely seen as a consequence of THC transforming.
CBN has been shown to have just as many benefits, critical and vast, as its fellow cannabinoids. It is often used alone to treat Glaucoma because it relieves intraocular eye pressure without psychoactive side effects. To date, CBN is being researched and propagated as a treatment for chronic pain, bone cell growth, and appetite stimulation. It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and has been shown to stop convulsions associated with a variety of medical conditions.
While CBN is being isolated and used to treat a spectrum of ailments, its strongest and most prominent attribute is its sedative quality. For this reason, CBN is now considered the best anti-insomnia compound above the other cannabinoids. It also takes very little CBN to do the job.
According to Steep Hill Labs, a sophisticated cannabis research and technology company, it takes as little as 2.5mg to 5mg of CBN to produce highly successful sedative effects. According to Leafly.com, most cannabis flower contains only small amounts of this cannabinoid. For this reason, the growing concentrate, tincture, and boutique cannabis market will be absolutely essential in spreading the use of CBN as a popular form of sleep medication.
Restorative and Meaningful Sleep
For insomnia sufferers, the news of a completely natural sedative presents a very exciting promise of relief without side effects. While there are a plethora of different holistic supplements (vitamins and minerals) that may offer sleep-aiding principles, few can rival the sedation that accompanies traditional pharmaceuticals. Steep Hill Labs, among others in the business of cannabis genetics, believe that CBN can and will provide a new alternative to former means. One that not only combats insomnia, but provides restorative and meaningful sleep.
